Altec Lansing Mix IMT800 | My Personal Review
Altec Lansing and Their Speaker Systems
The Altec Lansing MIX iMT800 speaker is one of a few speaker systems I have. I used to have the Logitech Wireless Boombox but it was given away. I did a review on the Jawbone Jambox but its size does not really appeal to me but I did use it for a while.
The speaker system that really did stay with me for a long time is this speaker from Altec Lansing. The initial reason why I wanted to buy this speaker is not because I really liked it but I just wanted to have something different.
To the average 20 something male who is into gadgets and stuff like that, the sheer size of this thing and the overall design may not catch your attention. Although it does have a bulky look, the sound that comes out of the Altec Lansing MIX iMT800 is incredible. It merely reinforces how much more I like speakers from Altec Lansing more than any other brands like Bose, Creative and Logitech.
The Good Stuff About This Speaker
Sound Quality
I love speakers with good bass. I also love speaker systems that don't sound too bassy but also has goo mids and high notes. I would rather listen to music with equally as much thump as the finer guitar notes or higher pitch sounds than something that is just too bass heavy.
Altec Lansing has a reputation for making speaker systems that may sound too bassy for some but this Altec Lansing MIX iMT800 is certainly well balanced. it has enough volume to fill up big halls or big spaces. For the price you pay, it is certainly worth it. In fact, I am pretty sure that the Altec Lansing inMotion MIX iMT800 is one of the best sounding portable boombox speaker systems in the market. The XdB and bass effects make dancing to hip hop/rap/ or any bass heavy music a true delight.
Radio and Connectivity
The 2 auxillary inputs means that you can plug anything in with a headphone jack or some auxillary jack. This means just about anything can be plugged in and not just your iPods or iPhones. Even your iPads will be compatible with it. If you want your computer or laptop connected to it, this wouldn't be a problem at all.
You can also listen to FM radio on the Altec Lansing MIX iMT800 but not AM radio. Not a big issue for me as I normally listen to FM radio. There are also 4 presets which you can program yourself.
Portability
I was afraid that the Altec Lansing MIX iMT800 may be a bit heavy when i first looked at it but I was clearly wrong. It is easy to carry around on the shoulder which makes you like a really cool hip teenager. It is also easy to bring around in whatever other ways you can think of thanks to its weight of about 12-13 pounds. IMHO, this weight is definitely not an issue for the average person.
The Other Good Stuff About It
When you receive a call on your iPhone, the Altec Lansing MIX iMT800 immediately silences the music and plays the ring tone through its speakers. So, you will never miss a call while listening to it.
The IFFY stuff OR Should I say.. Things That Could Be Better
Design
I am not sure who are the designers of this speaker but it certainly does not look like it has blended the "80s retro boombox style" properly with its 21st century features. It kind of looks like there are areas that can be improved. I mean I wouldn't mind having to look at something that looks like a rea "80s style boombox" with digital display or touch screen features but I think the designers can definitely improve the overall appearance of the Altec Lansing MIX iMT800.
Power Supply
It would be great if Altec Lansing made the battery rechargeable although this really isn't a big issue. Judging from the price you are already paying for this speaker, I think this is a very minor issue.
